I personally don’t really enjoy oysters, but if they were being served at a dinner or somethin I would definitely have a few. I don’t speak for all vegetarians, so preference is a major player in this debate. I read many articles going back and fourth on this controversial topic to find out if there is a right or wrong answer.
The main argument that most people make is that oysters lack a central nervous system. These little creatures cannot feel pain the same way humans and other animals do. Or at least we just can’t understand if they do or not. The same can be said for plants though. Many articles compare oysters to plants, but I think that goes a little too far. Categorizing oysters under plants is not correct because they are part of the animal kingdom.
Another major argument is that oyster farming is actually good for the environment. Most of the oysters consumed are cultivated. Oysters are natural water purifiers, so an entire farm of oysters can help to clean a lot of water over time. And unlike other animal farms, deforestation, overpopulation, and habitat destruction do not have to occur. Just one acre of land underwater can raise up to 750,000 oysters. That is such a large number for such a small portion of land.
